If you want to increase their golf knowledge, skills, and ability to execute and achieve varying levels of efficiency on the driving range and golf course.
The Goals of the Novice Golf Program
Goals provide the foundation and motivation for learning. There are a variety of different goals which need to be determined and written down.

Learn the Basics of the Golf Swing
- Static-Posture,
- Golf Grip,
- Golf Alignment,
- Golf Ball Position,
- Dynamic-Balance,
- Golf Swing Extension,
- Center of Gravity,
- Weight Shift in the Golf Swing
Skill Sets Required
These are goals you need to work at achieving in order to proceed to the intermediate level.
For a completely new golfer these can be adjusted downward initially but the goal should be to reach this level before proceeding to another level.
All goals/requirements are general indicators of growth/knowledge.
Every individual is unique and programs can be devised to fit their abilities at the time.
When you take to the course, the following stats should be recorded on your scorecard.
- Green in Regulation
- Up & Down
- Putting Distances
Record Greens in Regulation
- Male – 1 to 3 times in 18 holes
- Female – 1 to 3 times in 18 holes
Record any Up & Down inside 25 Yards
- Up & Down percentage inside 25 yards (over 10 rounds of golf):
- Male:
- 5-10% from grass
- 5-15% from sand
- Female:
- 5-10% from grass
- 5-10% from sand
- Male:

Record Your made putts from different distances
- Male:
- 60% from 1 to 3 feet
- 30% from 4 to 5 feet
- 10-20% from 6 to 10 feet
- 5-10% from 11 to 15 feet
- Female:
- 60% from 1 to 3 feet
- 30% from 4 to 5 feet
- 10-20% from 6 to 10 feet
- 5-10% from 11 to 15 feet

GOALS of the Novice Golf Program
These provide the foundation and motivation for learning. There are a variety of different goals which need to be determined and written down.
A goal is an objective or a result to achieving a specific level of performance or proficiency to an activity.
There are two types of goals.
SUBJECTIVE & OBJECTIVE
- Subjective goals are general statements “I want to win”
- Objective goals are specific statements “I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months”
Objective goals have 3 components:
- Outcome Goals:
- typically focus on a competitive result of an event
- short term motivation
- uncontrolled
- Performance Goals
- Focus on achieving performance objectives independent of other competitors
- Flexible and controllable
- Process Goals
- Focuses on the actions an individual must engage in during performance to execute/perform well
Novice Outcome Goals:
- Make a full golf swing
- Manage a full golf swing for 9 holes
- Break 100/90
- Prepare a weekly/monthly practice schedule
- Learning basic concepts of ball flight
- Learning basic concepts of distance control
Novice Performance Goals:
- Be able to apply all 4 basics of the static settings by end of golf season
- Achieving at least 1 group of the skills required by end of season
- Putting 100% of putts from 1-3 feet
- Achieving 5 of 14 fairways from the tee box
- Reducing the # of 3 putts to less than 3 in an 18 round of golf
Novice Process Goals:
- Maintain posture angles
- Shift weight from 80% on back leg in backswing to 100% on front leg in follow through
- Maintain radius from top of chest bone to wrists during golf swing
- Pressure in grip at 4-6 on a scale of 10 with 10 the tightest
Practice Goals:
- Blocked (80%) & Random (20%) practice variety
- 2-5 hours/week (some practice can be at home using a mirror or back yard just swinging without hitting any golf balls)
- Play at least 1x every week (Par 3, 9 holes, 18 holes)
- Outdoor: 40% putting, 30% short game, 30% long game
- 100-300 ball strikes
- 100 ball strikes/session
- Combinations are endless
- ½ putting – ½ LG
- 60% LG – 20% SG – 20% putting
- 1 hr/day – putting, 1 hr/day-SG, 1 hr/day-LG
- If 2-5 hours/week must be done in 2 weeks, then keep the schedule you’re working on and extend it into a 2-week period using different combinations for a 5-hour period
- Practice short/long putts; on green and off green putts
- Practice chipping & pitching; different clubs chipping; different lengths pitching
- Practice long irons distance control (if you have something to gauge distance that would be a benefit); utility clubs, driver
- Mapping of shot results on practice green
- Mental preparation of discipline in routine development
- Focus on lesson material only (do not deviate to alternative theories at this stage)
